“The space within becomes the reality of the building.” – Frank Lloyd Wright

Take a moment, just now, and stop what you’re doing. Close your eyes. Breathe slowly in for the count of four, hold for two, and out for the count of four. Do this four more times. I’ll wait.

Go on, do it now. Close your eyes and do five slow, deliberate breaths in and out.

How was that? How do you feel now? Hopefully, calmer, more relaxed, and more peaceful.

Congratulations. You just touched the space within yourself. Inside each of us is a divine spark – or, as Yoda would say, a luminous beam – from which our love, our creativity, and our vitality come forth. The reality of our lives is, to a significant extent, a function of how well we nurture the space within ourselves.

It’s entirely likely that Frank Lloyd Wright was talking about actual buildings when he said today’s quote. To be truthful, that was my initial intention when searching for appropriate quotes for this image. (Which I loved, and shot on one of my previous photo walks.)

But then I began to consider the different ways the quote could be interpreted. What if the building was really us, and the space within referred to our spirituality? The quote becomes really interesting, and the discourse takes on a whole new depth.

When we take the time to nurture ourselves, to slow down enough to listen to our spirit, and to gently nurture and grow the space within, we give ourselves a profound gift.

Take another five breaths with your eyes closed, right now. (While the boss isn’t looking.)

Then, say to yourself, out loud but quietly: “Thankyou. I love you.”

With love,
Israel. xo

PS. Today is Valentine’s Day, and you just gave a beautiful gift – the gift of love for yourself. Isn’t that the best gift to both give and receive on Valentine’s Day?
