“Look up.”

I walked to post a letter this afternoon.

The golden afternoon light wrapped itself tightly around the treetops, an absent lover making up for lost time. Tickled by the sweet breath of the West, the trees swayed in delight. A crescendo of white noise from nearby traffic masked the creaking and moaning of the boughs. A gust of quicker breath; the trees shivered. As light lay down towards the horizon, its colour flushed warmer and hotter. A gentle caress became a firm hold; muted pastels became saturated contrasts; soft curves of tone became hard shadows of fire.

All that came happened as I walked to the post box. I watched as at least three separate people walked past the exact same scene while staring intently at their smartphones.

Look up.

See the world.

Get away from your digital devices while you’re walking down the street.

Open your eyes to the glorious wonder of the planet we inhabit. Notice the brash sensuality of amazing light and promiscuous foliage. (Or whatever your mind conjures.) Drink in the poetry of the breeze; gorge on the visual feast of sunset.

Or don’t.

But if you don’t, please know there’s an enormity of rich and sumptuous life that you’re missing, as you pursue a richer “life” on the small glowing rectangle in your palm.

With love,
Israel. xo
