“Hide not your talents. They for use were made. What’s a sundial in the shade?” – Benjamin Franklin

Interesting use of rhyme, Mr Franklin.

Also, an interesting use of the notion of applied purpose. A sundial in the shade is a lovely ornament but, aesthetics aside, it remains fundamentally useless.

We often “hide out” in plain view, not sharing our wonderful talents for fear of… what, exactly? Tall poppy syndrome? Failure? Being found out (imposter syndrome)?

I don’t know.

I know I do it anyway.

I realise I have talents, and I have the capacity to use them for good in the world. The fear is ridiculous, but it strikes deeply and affects me, nonetheless.

The real challenge here is to feel the fear and keep moving forward; keep being the sundial standing in open sun; keep using my talents proudly and for the purpose which they have been designed.

Today’s request: reach out if you’re feeling the fear. Email me, and let’s talk about our fears, together.

My suspicion is this: by talking openly about our fears with another, we will realise how pointless our fears are, and will find courage to move forward in spite of the fear.

With love,
Israel. xo
