“Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best.” – Henry Van Dyke

What talents do you possess? What special sauce do you have that noone else has? What unique thing can only you bring to the world?

I’ve been thinking about this a great deal since my chat with Greg Hartle the other day. I don’t have a solid answer yet… I know how I relate to my work as a family portrait photographer, but I haven’t figured this out in a broader context yet. I know – and truthfully, I have known this for ages – that the only way for my work to survive and thrive in the coming years, is for me to get a clear handle on who I am as a photographer and as a person, unique and different to everyone else, and then own that wholeheartedly.

ALL birds have a beautiful song; they’re just all different.

Here’s a challenge: spend 10 minutes and brainstorm like crazy. Write any and all ideas you have about what makes you special and unique, and what skills you have that make your song stand out from the crowd.

And if you’re interested in sharing, send me an email – israel@israelsmith.com – and we can swap notes.

With love,
Israel. xo
